MY TAKE ON THE GEORGE ZIMMERMAN / TRAYVON MARTIN CASE!
Unless you have been living in a cave, someplace off the grid, you must have heard about the verdict in the case of the State of Florida vs. George Zimmerman. Mr. Zimmerman was charged with 2nd Degree Murder and Manslaughter. After a very contentious trial before a jury of six women, Mr. Zimmerman was found "NOT GUILTY!" In my humble opinion, the verdict was the correct one given the state of the evidence, or the lack thereof, that the State Prosecutors presented.
Let me emphasize at the outset that this whole incident is a tremendous tragedy. There is a seventeen year old boy who is dead. I cannot conceive of the pain the parents of Trayvon Martin must be feeling. Parents should not have to bury their children! I sympathize with the Martin family because they are the truly innocent victims in this whole affair.
Also tragic is that George Zimmerman's life is forever changed. He was forced to defend his life from what he reasonably believed to be a potentially lethal assault. Mr. Zimmerman shot and killed Mr. Martin in self defense. The evidence bore that fact out! As a result, Mr. Zimmerman will have to live with the fact that he took a human life, one that had barely begun to mature. This will haunt him for the rest of his life. Additionally, if he is wise, he will have to be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.
This tragedy is not without its villains. In no particular order of contempt, the first inductee into the Villain's Hall of Infamy...
The so-called Fourth Estate, more commonly known as the "News Media," conducted themselves without honor or fairness. The press should report the facts of a given story fairly and without bias. When this incident occurred, a certain national news network deliberately edited the tape of the 911 call that Mr. Zimmerman made in an effort to portray him as a racist. Most of the Media Cabal, with few exceptions, followed along in lockstep.
As far as the media was concerned, George Zimmerman was a racist, cop wanna be, who carried a gun and was looking for a reason to use it. They also portray Trayvon Martin as pure as the driven snow who was profiled and victimized by a racist cop wanna be.
Neither portrayal was correct, considering the facts. George Zimmerman was not the racist, cold blooded monster that he was painted to be. Trayvon Martin was not the squeaky clean choir boy that he was described to be. They are two people who by a confluence of unwise choices, made by each of them, resulted in the untimely death of one of them.
The press should be ashamed of itself, but sadly to their discredit, they won't be!
Next, in my Villains Hall of Infamy, are the so called race baiters. Men like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and others of their ilk who have seized upon this tragedy to inflame passions, rush to judgement and exacerbate this tragedy to further divide the races in this country.
These people have a vested interest in perpetuating the perception of racism despite any evidence to the contrary. That is how they earn their living. They perpetrate lies when the facts are against them. They yell and scream and incite their crowds to see injustice where there is none.
In this particular case, the Sanford Police conducted a thorough investigation. The FBI conducted a thorough investigation. Both agencies concluded that the evidence showed that there was NO RACIAL ANIMUS in this case. The Sanford Police ruled that Mr. Zimmerman acted in self defense in compliance with the laws of the State of Florida. In short, as tragic as the incident was, no crimes were committed.
That was not good enough for the race baiters. They yelled and screamed and ginned up their crowds to such an extent, demanding that Mr. Zimmerman be arrested, that a special prosecutor was appointed.
Mr. Zimmerman was arrested and charged, that is to say over-charged, with 2nd Degree Murder. Once the facts came out at trial and we all saw for ourselves the truth of what happened between Mr. Zimmerman and Mr. Martin the egregiousness of this prosecution became clear.
Mr. Zimmerman was prosecuted, not because he committed any crime, but because the State of Florida wrongly bowed to the pressure exerted on it by these vile people.
The third inductee into the Villains Hall of Infamy are the State Prosecutors who perpetrated this outrageous prosecution. Having been a prosecutor myself, it is the duty of every prosecutor to fairly evaluate the facts of any case that comes before them and to correctly apply the law. They are bound by their code of ethics to not prosecute a case if the facts and the law does not warrant such a prosecution. In this case the facts clearly did not warrant such a prosecution.
These spineless public servants kowtowed to the race baiters and the protesters and violated their code of ethics to their shame and cowardice. These men and women are trained lawyers and must have known better, but failed miserably in the discharge of their responsibilities. Public opinion must not play ANY part in the decision of whether to prosecute or not.
In closing let me just say that if the U.S. Department of Justice institutes any federal prosecution against Mr. Zimmerman, they will become my fourth inductee into the Villains Hall of Infamy.
The FBI has said that this case is NOT about race. The State Prosecutors have said that this case is NOT about race. Mr.Martin's grieving parents have publicly stated that this case is NOT about race. THIS CASE IS TRAGIC, THIS CASE IS NOT ABOUT RACE, THIS CASE IS NOT CRIMINAL!
I pray for Gods blessings on the Martin family. May He grant them some measure of peace and comfort during their time of sorrow. I pray for God's blessings on the City of Sanford and the State of Florida. I pray for God's blessings on Mr. Zimmerman and his family. I pray for God's blessings on the entire Nation that the healing will begin!

I stopped by from the Hodgepodge link but carried on reading and I'm glad I did!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this honest and balanced portrayal of this tragic case. I'm from England so our press coverage has been different to that in the US, but even from here it's obvious that there was something not quite right about the whole thing. I didn't know anything of the case until we got reports of rioting and demonstrations after the verdict, so forgive me if I'm not too well informed about the details of it.
As you say, the real tragedy here is that a 17 year old young man is dead, and no matter what happens, both his family and the family of Mr Zimmerman will have to live with the consequences of that forever. What strikes me as odd is that if Mr Zimmerman has been tried and judged fairly and according to all the state laws and guidelines in place, why is there such outrage at the verdict? If there had been a hint that due process had not been followed then I could understand why people got angry, but if everything is according to the processes of the law then how can there be anger at the verdict? I think it's as you say, that there are people out there who are trying to exploit the race angle for their own purposes - heaven forfend that the truth get in the way of a good fight!!
I pray that God will send his Spirit into the midst of all that tension and that people will see sense and reason with his grace.
