SELF EVIDENT TRUTHS

"We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."


     These words were penned 234 years ago by Thomas Jefferson. These words appear in our Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. At the time they were written, most governments consisted of a King or Queen who wielded absolute power. King Louis of France is quoted to have said "LEtat, c'est moi!", I am the State!
     It was clearly understood that to speak out  publicly against the King meant imprisonment and possibly execution. The rights of the citizenry derived from the benevolence of the monarchy. Whatever that King bestowed benevolently He, or his successors, could just as easily revoke with or without just cause.
     What was so radical about what our founding fathers professed was that this paradigm was turned upside down onto it's head. Our founding fathers believed that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.  They embodied these beliefs in our Constitution, the highest law in the land.
    Our founding fathers believed that the existence of "...their Creator" is self evident, in other words it is an established fact. No further proof is needed...it is true!
    They also believe that it was self evident that where the power of government expanded the liberty of the citizenry contracted.
     We can see this being played out in our country today. The United States recently passed a law that most of those those who voted for it did not read it and for the first time requires it's citizens to purchase a product against their will. The liberty of the citizenry is contracting!
     Our system of governance works only if the citizens become informed, become involved and hold our elected representatives accountable. This too is self evident.
